Searching your own site on Google barely tells you your real ranking. Discover the free, reliable method, using Search Console, to check and track your keyword position.

You type your main keyword into Google, you cannot find your site anywhere, and you conclude that your SEO is not working. That is often a false alarm: the search you run from your own computer, shaped by your browsing history and your location, does not reflect what a prospect in Lyon, Bordeaux or Marseille actually sees. Knowing your Google keyword ranking requires a method, not a manual search. According to Digital Gagnant, 68% of small business owners name SEO as their top digital priority, yet very few actually know where they stand on their strategic queries. Here is how to get a reliable answer, free at first, then refined with the right tools.

Why your own Google search means nothing

A search run from your usual browser is skewed by several factors that completely distort the result:

  • Your browsing history: if you visit your own site regularly, Google artificially pushes it up for you.
  • Your precise geographic location: Google adapts results down to a few kilometres, not just at city level.
  • The device you use: mobile and desktop rankings can differ noticeably for the same query.
  • Personalisation tied to your Google account: previous searches, inferred interests, and so on.

The result: two people typing the exact same query at the exact same time can see a different ranking. To get a reliable reading, you either need to neutralise these biases or use an objective measurement tool.

The free and reliable method: Google Search Console

Before considering a paid tool, Google Search Console (GSC) remains the most reliable source, since it comes directly from Google and is free for any site whose ownership you can verify.

Where to find your average position

Once your property is verified in Search Console, go to the Performance menu, then Search results. Tick the Average position box above the graph, then scroll down to the query table. For every keyword that generated at least one impression over the selected period, you get the average position, the number of impressions, the number of clicks and the click-through rate (CTR). It is the most complete view, since it covers every query that surfaced your site, including ones you would never have thought of.

The limits of average position

This figure remains an average calculated over a period, not a snapshot at a single moment. If you rank 3rd one day and 14th the next because of an algorithm update or a competitor publishing new content, Search Console will display an average that smooths out these swings. It also does not show exactly what a user at a given location sees, nor whether a sponsored result or an AI generated summary (the AI Overview, rolled out by Google since May 2025 across more than 120 countries) appears above your link.

Checking an exact position without your browser's bias

For a one off, precise check on a given keyword, several free methods help limit the bias:

  • Private browsing: it removes session history and cookies, but does not change your IP based location.
  • Google search settings: by manually changing the target city in the search location settings, you can simulate the view of a user located elsewhere.
  • A VPN: useful for switching country or region, though less precise on the exact city.
  • A third party checking tool: several online services query Google from a neutral server and display the real ranking, without your own history interfering.

This manual check is useful from time to time, but quickly becomes time consuming if you track more than a handful of keywords over the long run.

Automating tracking with a rank tracking tool

For regular monitoring across a portfolio of keywords, dedicated rank tracking tools take over from Search Console. They query Google automatically, daily or weekly, from servers located wherever you choose, and keep a usable history in the form of a trend line. This answers questions that GSC alone cannot: did my position move after my latest publication? Where do I stand against my two main competitors on this specific query? Am I ranking better on mobile than on desktop?

Before choosing a tool, first define the list of queries that genuinely matter for your business: it is better to track 15 to 20 high commercial potential queries than 200 generic keywords. Our article on competitive analysis of a website explains how to spot the queries where your competitors capture traffic you could win back.

Which keywords a small business should track first

Not all queries are equal. For a company with limited resources, effort should focus on:

  • Queries with clear commercial intent ("accountant in Marseille", "website creation for SMEs"), which sit much closer to conversion than generic informational queries.
  • Local queries, since 46% of monthly Google searches carry local intent according to data cited by Digital Gagnant, a share that matters a great deal for any business selling to a specific territory.
  • Queries where you are already close to the Top 3, roughly positions 4 to 15: this is where a targeted effort (optimising an existing page, adding internal links, improving load speed) delivers the fastest return, rather than starting from scratch on a query where you rank 40th.

Our article on page load speed as an SEO ranking factor covers exactly one of the most cost effective technical levers for this type of near Top 3 query.

What to do once you know your ranking

Measuring without acting achieves nothing. Once your position is identified on your priority queries, several concrete actions help you move forward:

  • Rework existing content rather than creating something new: add answers to the questions your visitors actually ask, sharpen the titles, expand paragraphs that are too thin.
  • Strengthen internal linking by connecting your best ranking pages to the ones that are stagnating, so authority flows internally.
  • Check the technical structure: title tags, heading hierarchy, load time, mobile adaptation.
  • Weigh the investment against paid search when time is short. Our article SEO vs Google Ads explains how to arbitrate between the two levers depending on your time horizon.

This groundwork ties into the principles covered in our guide to optimising your site's SEO in 5 steps, and in the one dedicated to improving your search ranking. If your site is old or was never designed with SEO in mind, a redesign built to preserve your organic ranking can be more cost effective than piling up fixes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Search Console enough to know your ranking?

For the vast majority of small businesses, yes, at least to start. It is a free, official and reliable tool that gives the average position, impressions and clicks for every query. Its limits mainly show up if you want precise daily tracking or a direct comparison against named competitors, which then requires a dedicated rank tracking tool.

Why can't I find my own site when I search for it myself?

Your own search is shaped by your browsing history, your precise location and the device you use. You could easily rank 5th for a user located 10 kilometres from your business while not finding your site through your own search if Google interprets your profile differently.

How many keywords should a small business track?

It is better to track 15 to 20 genuinely strategic queries, with clear commercial or local intent, rather than several hundred generic keywords. Tracking too broadly dilutes attention and makes day to day analysis unreadable.

Should you focus on keywords where you already rank fairly well?

This is often the most cost effective lever in the short term. A query ranked 6th to 15th generally requires less effort to reach the Top 3 than a query where you are starting from far behind. That does not mean you should stop working on new topics for the long run.

Does the rise of AI generated results change how you track rankings?

Yes, partly. Since Google rolled out the AI Overview more broadly from May 2025, an AI generated summary can appear above the classic results for certain queries, which visually pushes down your position even if your organic ranking stays stable. It becomes useful to regularly check, by eye, what a user actually sees for your priority queries, alongside the raw data.
